Hold my beer!

Writer's picture: Anthony CastroAnthony Castro

"Hold my beer...", I have said this so many times, usually before doing something extraordinary, at least in my mind, usually shortly after someone dared me or said I could not do something.

Life, like those doubters, can often present us with a challenge, and though we may not be three sheets into the wind, we must face each challenge with the same determination. I know that sometimes can be easier said than done.

When I was diagnosed with heart failure, I was faced with the challenge to just lay down and die or get up and live. I was so willing to give up because I felt there was nothing left, that was it, I was done for. For three months I lay there in bed preparing for my own imminent demise.

One day I heard a voice , whether it was my own indominable spirit, or God, I lean towards the latter, it said something like this "Giving up so soon? Gonna just lay there? You are Castro, I thought you didn't like losing. I double dog dare you to bounce back." I paraphrase of course.

I found a new determination, a new drive. I realized that up until that moment I had been wasting my life. I had not achieved any of my dreams, I squandered the life I had been given, and now I am faced with the fact that I have much less of it left than I believed.

I have used my remaining time to chase my dream and through my story I hope to inspire others. Life is short and we must take it by the horns or it will undoubtably run your ass over.

I encourage you all to dig deep, find what gives you hope, what gives you faith and prove life wrong, show life you will not go quietly into the night, and if you are gonna go, do it with a "YEE-FRICKIN-HAW!"

We will have our crappy days , we will have our doubters, and we will want to give up. When that happens, my friends, roll up those sleeves, spit on those palms and say "Hold my beer."

James 1:12 (NIV) “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”
